CycleCities events in Gdansk

06. October 2014
On 11 and 12 September 2014 in Gdansk a series of co-organised CycleCities international events, including 2nd International Conference, Interregional Forum, Workshop and Study Visit, falling under the umbrella of the “Active Mobility” took place.

The purpose of all these events was to provide a platform for the presentation & exchange of experiences and proposals of innovative solutions to the challenges of daily mobility in cities especially in conjunction with urban planning.

333 participants attended the different sessions where speakers from Poland, Germany, France, Austria, Sweden, Greece and the Netherlands, presented the role of active forms of mobility and sustainable transport in cities’ everyday life.
An important objective of the programme was to discuss about the good and bad practices of spatial planning of our cities. Acknowledging the importance of the sustainable transport environment, as society continues to move away from the traditional monocentric cities to polycentric regions, the topics covered key questions such as; How should “Cities for Humans” look like in the future? “What are the effects of urban sprawl on social cohesion?”, “How to encourage bicycle daily commuting and walking to work and school?” etc. Additionally were presented and discussed examples of companies which realize the economic benefit of these sustainable modes by improving workers’ health and reducing expenses for parking construction.

On the afternoon of the 11th a study visit took place, with a cycling tour through the city. During the bike ride participants got acquainted with Gdansk cycling infrastructure, cycle paths, cycle lanes and bike sharing facilities.

Additionally, throughout the same day there was the opportunity for fun by played in groups, the “City planners” board game, developed by the CycleCities project. The scope of this game is to highlight how important is cycling in sustainable city planning.

The meeting was a perfect opportunity of sharing and exchanging experiences between urban planners, architects, officials and NGOs’ activists in the field of modern methods of planning and, above all, sustainable model transport systems in urban centres. CycleCities partners and related participants not only got acquainted with the knowledge of speakers coming from many countries, but also created a network of interconnections.
